Let us know more about HIPEC

What is HIPEC?

Some cancers such as breast or cervical cancers are easily accessible to certain treatment methods such as radiation therapy and chemotherapy. But, some cancers like that of the abdominal cavity lining are difficult to treat using these methods. Though there have been many advances in the field of chemotherapy, they haven’t been successful in curing cancers of the abdominal cavity such as appendiceal cancer, pseudomyxoma peritonei, colon cancer, gastric cancer, ovarian cancer, and peritoneal mesothelioma.
It is here that HIPEC or Hyperthermic Intraoperative Peritoneal Chemotherapy is useful. The word ‘Intraperitoneal’ is used to indicate that the treatment is given directly to the abdominal cavity lining. The word ‘Hyperthermic’ is used to indicate that the chemotherapy solution is heated to a temperature which is greater than the regular body temperature.

What Happens During the Procedure?

HIPEC treatment in India is done at best cancer hospitals. Before a HIPEC procedure is performed, the surgeon uses standard surgical techniques to remove parts of the tumour visible clinically all across the peritoneal cavity. This is usually done by a cyto-reductive surgery. Once this is done, the surgeon administers HIPEC treatment.

During the procedure, the surgeon circulates a heated sterile chemotherapeutic solution throughout the peritoneal cavity for up to a maximum of 2 hours. During this procedure, the chemotherapeutic drug is absorbed by the peritoneal cavity and so, there is little or no exposure to the remaining part of the body.
This procedure is aimed at killing the remnants of cancer cells that may have been left behind after the surgical removal of the tumour(that are too small to be seen or removed surgically). This also prevents the development of new tumours.

Are There Any Side Effects to the Procedure?

Compared to the side effects a patient suffers in generalised chemotherapy, the side effects with a HIPEC procedure are minimal. The majority of the side effects occur after the surgical removal of the tumour. Since the HIPEC therapy is aimed directly at the cells of the abdominal cavity lining, the agent is unable to cross the peritoneal-plasma barrier and reach other parts of the body.

It is also important to note that International Second Opinion from U.K and USA can have life changing implications in terms of consultants specialising in HIPEC surgery. Cancer needs to be treated early so that the prognosis is better but patients recover from Stage 3 and 4 if treated at best cancer centres through skilled HIPEC oncologists. This article intends to let you know whether HIPEC treatment in India is possible and who is the best HIPEC surgeon for you to access.
